third grade art
Art in third grade is full of exciting new experiences including, creating collaborative art from recycled and natural materials. We also explore how math and science are utilized in creating works of art. Third graders will continue to understand the Elements and Principles in art and discuss how they are used in works of art. We will look at how digital media has affected visual art. Third graders will have a lot of fun this year exploring new things in the art room!

Sketchbooks
Throughout the year, students will add drawings to their sketchbooks when they have completed work early. Most drawings will come from ideas they choose from the Jar of Inspiration, which will challenge them to draw things they might not normally try. They will also have some worksheets on the Elements of Art, which are the ingredients artists use to create.
For the cover of their sketchbook, third graders will make characters out of the letters of their name. First, they draw block letters, then add details like eyes, mouth/beak, arms/wings, etc.

Frog Study
In collaboration with their classroom project on frogs, each student will make a 2D and 3D version of their frog. In each project, students will be asked to recall information they have learned about their frog in order to create the most accurate version of their frog. We will emphasize observation skills and positive ways encouraging each other through critique.
Recycled Art
We will be looking at how artists use recycled materials in their artwork. Students will bring in some of their own materials to create a recycled robot as a group.
Abstract Art
We will study the art of Wassily Kandinsky, one of the first purely abstract artists.
ABSTRACT ART is art that uses shapes, forms, colors, and textures instead of images.
Students will study art by Kandinsky, looking for anything that relates to math. Then students will create their own abstract art piece using specified math facts, oil pastel and watercolor.
